If you're implying that you already know perl4, then you don't really *have* to learn anything new. With very few exceptions, perl5 is a strict superset of perl4. If you don't know perl at all, but are proficient in other Unix-isms (sh/ksh, awk, and sed in particular) the man pages should be enough to get started (but the O'Reilly "camel book" (_Programming_Perl_) should be considered mandatory). If you want a really soft entry, the "llama book" (_Learning_Perl_) is nice. If you really want to get down and dirty, the "panther book" (_Advanced_Perl_Programming_) is quite nice. You can't go wrong with O'Reilly perl books, IMHO. The camel book should be considered mandatory, no matter what your interests are (i.e. don't buy just the llama or panther book without buying the camel too :-).
