Although, ange-ftp is very nice, another very convenient
software for mirroring files and such is `rsync'. It is a
kind of intelligent version of `rcp', which only transfers
the data that changed in the file (similar to a
`diff'/`patch' combination, which allows you transfer only
the changes between two versions of a file). The lattest
version of `rsync' can also be used as a kind of file
server.

For example, I have all my Web pages on my local machine,
where I edit and preview them. Then, I wrote a small shell
script, which allows me to `rsync' the stuff to the
filesystem of the Web server. This saves net-load and on a
slow link is much faster than ange-ftp. (Quite cool would be
a kind of ange-rsync for Emacs, but I have never seen
something like that. You probably know this situation where
you changed a single character and without thinking typed
C-x C-s and Emacs starts to transfer that 100KB file over a
ultra-slow link...)

I also use `rsync' to sync my desktop and NotePC machine.
