I just noticed that you are talking about using canna in mule.  What I
said before still applies, but I also know the solution to your problem of
the backspace key.

I believe the following is used to be able to use backspace while
you are entering kana.  (In .emacs)
   
      (define-key canna-mode-map [backspace] [?\C-h])
      (define-key canna-mode-map [delete] [?\C-h])
