Futher display speed were rather slow I was also unhappy with some display elements proving to be invisible when I tried to use MI/X. A possible alternative to using X is to use the Olivetti/Oracle VNC remote computing software. It will let you view an X display on a Windows machine (or a Windows display on an X machine, or either on a Pilot). I've mentioned this on the list before, and feel compelled to mention it again because the hack value is just so high. At the pre-TLUG-meeting-setup on Saturday, Joe Marchak and I were lamenting that about the only time we had to use Windows nowadays was to read ccMail. With VNC, I can use an idle Win95 machine across the room and display my ccMail in a window on one of my Linux machines. VNC runs across a single TCP connection, so it is easy to run through SSH. http://www.orl.co.uk/vnc/ The display speed is not great (VNC uses a simple protocol and transfers "tiles" that need updating to your viewer)... but it is (barely) acceptable even with 486s on both ends. -- Jim Tittsler, Tokyo ICQ: 5981586 AIM: Jim7J1AJH -------------------------------------------------------------- Next Nomikai: 17 July, 19:30 Tengu TokyoEkiMae 03-3275-3691 Next Meeting: 8 August, Tokyo Station Yaesu central gate 12:30 *** 20 June: TLUG will be at the Tokyo Linux Fair http://tlug.linux.or.jp/projects/linux-fair/fair.html -------------------------------------------------------------- Sponsor: PHT, makers of TurboLinux http://www.pht.co.jp
