Sounds like authentication is working, but that your xsession script is
dying early.

* Make sure that /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xdm/Xsession exists and is executable
* If ~/.xsession exists, make sure that it is executable
* Look at ~/.xsession-errors
* Look at /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xdm/xdm-errors
