<IMO> >>>>> "Craig" == Craig Toshio Oda <craigoda@example.com> writes: Craig> someone wrote to me again and asked if it was okay to post Craig> job availability messages to the TLUG list. Yes, with the proviso that they be list members. Craig> Also, someone asked if it was acceptable to try and recruit Craig> people at a TLUG meeting. Yes, in principle. Jonathan put the argument "for" very well. Craig> I responded that the group is pretty relaxed and that if Craig> everyone is having a good time over a beer or something Craig> that it was fine. During beer, only a job offer with acceptance is allowed, and only if announced on the spot. That way, the rest of the members can join in a toast! :-) Seriously, don't make rules you can't enforce. People who do tacky things will not get much attention from potential colleagues, and negative attention from the rest. People who are smooth will get the attention of the relevant person, and nobody else will notice until the deal's sealed. Craig> Alternately, we could encourage this type of job Craig> announcement when the microphone is passed around during Craig> the introductions. Tacky, IMHO. More important, ineffective---how much can you say in 30 secs? How much will people remember? Alternatively, how about a recruiters' corner with a bulletin board where recruiters could post their announcements. That would also provide a natural focus for the one-on-one encounters. While we're at it, I enjoyed the presentation on Empress or whatever that database doohickey was called last time. But not everybody's in a position to do that kind of talk. How about a "product poster corner" too, where people can (quietly) unashamedly push their own vaguely Linux-related stuff, whether it's edict.el or TurboLinux, ATAPI interfaces (only with driver ;-) or an ISP? </IMO> -- By the way, I'm willing to consider job offers. Salary goal: US$200,000 within 3 years. That academic lifestyle makes up for a lot of money!
