This sounds very much like what Apple is working toward with Mac OS X [1] from http://www.macosrumors.com/OSX.html [2] * The "Advanced Macintosh Look and Feel" is the key. Mac OS users will simply see new features added to their familiar interface, and the ease of use that Wintel users dream about will be backed up by a technology that leapfrogs much of the Windows APIs entirely. * Will feature BSD 4.4 UNIX on top of a heavily customized Mach microkernel, based on the 3.0 release of Mach. * Although just short of certifiable[3], many POSIX-compliant applications should compile on OSX's command line and run perfectly. [1] A while back Jonathan sent a post suggesting that Apple had thrown away all the work it did on Rhapsody [based on NeXT Step] (a post I never got around to debunking:). Where as, it seems to me, that Mac OS X's Carbon API is just an API to allow simplified porting of existing apps to take advantage of the new OS's features, such as preemptive multitasking with protected memory. The Yellow Box API [essentially NeXT Step] is still available for some of the more advance features like preemptive multithreading. (The previous Rhapsody plan put more pressure on the developers to entirely rewrite their apps for the Yellow Box (essentially unix), since protected mem, etc, were not planned for the Blue Box [the Mac OS emulator which was(is??) akin to how Win 95 handles 16 bit apps]). [2] Another Blacklight Media publication along with, the ever popular amongst TLUG members, slash-dot :) [3] What ever that means. tim :) -------------------------------------------------------------- Next Nomikai: 18 September, 19:30 Tengu TokyoEkiMae 03-3275-3691 Next Meeting: 10 October, Tokyo Station Yaesu central gate 12:30 -------------------------------------------------------------- Sponsor: PHT, makers of TurboLinux http://www.pht.co.jp
