Well, I solved the problem.  I got a note from Jim Tittsler that
suggested that maybe vi was just a symbolic link.  Well, it was,
but then when I tried to run the no linked version, I still 
didn't get anywhere.  

But that did get me thinking.  Anyway, I have a couple linux systems
installed on the same machine.  So I mounted the Redhat partition
rather than the Slackware parition and for some unknown reason, I
could use vi from the Redhat partition.  I still have no idea
why the one of the Slackware parition didn't work.
