Thanks for all the input so far on my LILO problem. I do have some progress to report and have apparently found the culprit. When looking at the Advanced Settings section of my BIOS, I found that the large disk access mode had become DOS instead of Other. Since I never touched this but know for certain that it was previously set to Other, I'm mystified as to what caused this, setting it back to Other fixed the problem with reporting the number of heads on my 6.4 GB disk, and fdisk now reports 16 heads, 63 sectors, 12592 cyclinders. So far, so good. Running LILO from a shell prompt works. So far, so good. BUT - at bootup, it still gets as far as printing LI and then freezes, so I'm still using a sysboot disk to boot the system. The boot partition is completely within the first 1024 cylinders, so this should work (indeed, it used to), so I'm kind of stumped as to why it doesn't now. What's the final magic key I need to get it back to normal? The partition table and lilo.conf are below. Thanks, Jonathan Partition table: The number of cylinders for this disk is set to 12592. This is larger than 1024, and may cause problems with: 1) software that runs at boot time (e.g., LILO) 2) booting and partitioning software form other OSs (e.g., DOS FDISK, OS/2 FDISK) Command (m for help): p]^H Disk /dev/hda: 16 heads, 63 sectors, 12592 cylinders Units = cylinders of 1008 * 512 bytes Device Boot Begin Start End Blocks Id System /dev/hda1 1 1 261 131512+ 82 Linux swap /dev/hda2 262 262 522 131544 83 Linux native /dev/hda3 523 523 12592 6083280 5 Extended /dev/hda5 523 523 1132 307408+ 83 Linux native /dev/hda6 1024 1133 1742 307408+ 83 Linux native /dev/hda7 1024 1743 3774 1024096+ 83 Linux native /dev/hda8 3072 3775 10682 3481600+ 83 Linux native /dev/hda9 10240 10683 12592 962608+ 83 Linux native lilo.conf boot=/dev/hda map=/boot/map install=/boot/boot.b prompt timeout=50 image=/boot/vmlinuz label=linux root=/dev/hda2 read-only ---------------------------------------------------------------- Next Nomikai: 20 November, 19:30 Tengu TokyoEkiMae 03-3275-3691 Next Technical Meeting: 12 December, 12:30 HSBC Securities Office ---------------------------------------------------------------- more info: http://tlug.linux.or.jp Sponsors: PHT, HSBC Securities
