Is W95 still there?  If so, you might be able to save yourself 
some trouble by checking the hardware manager properties.

Maybe your modem is one of the good types, Non-PNP.  Have you checked
all your cua{0-4} / ttyS{0-4} ports for a modem?  Do this by opening up
a modem program, like minicom, change the serial options to /dev/cuaX, 
then try typing 'at' or 'at&v'.  If you get any logical response, you've
found a modem.  You might even want to try cua5.  No idea how a default 
Linux configuration would know of or handle one of those though.

Look for where the phone line plugs in.   :)   (And while your at it,
see
if the card has any jumpers or writing on it.)
