No, it's an X application, and will demand that there be a
display for it to connect to.  It doesn't know about character
displays.

Ah, THAT is possible, but not using kinput2.  The utility you
want is "kon", which ships with all of the Japanese Linux
distributions (it's part of the installation tools, to provide
Japanese menus -- TurboLinux-J uses it, for e.g.).

You need a separate means of converting the characters, of
course.  With character-based applications, you're limited AFAIK
to applications that can speak directly with your conversion
server.  Pine can speak to Canna, Emacs can speak to most
anything (including Wnn6), if it's been compiled and set up to do
so.

I once played with a utility that was meant to provide a general
solution, an Expect-type "shell" around terminal processes that
would provide FEP services.  It was unstable, and only knew about
SKK (a keyboard-intensive input method used as a last-resort
input method in Emacs).  If it's been improved and is still
around, you MIGHT get some mileage out of that.  But you're
probably better off with apps that can talk directly to your
server.
