well, didn't do me a whole lot of good, I got exactly zero responses to my
question on that one :)

aic7xxx 5.1.4, as shipped in the 2.0.36 kernel, appears to finally be 'the
way it should be', at least as far as we can tell here...

Anyway, if the issue at hand is sound drivers - make sure that the OSS
guys haven't already made a driver for your card.  The OSS commercial
sound system ($20) has drivers for many of the new PCI cards...
