I've used this method to install Slackware on my elderly 386sx notebook
which doesn't have a PC card slot.

As someone already mentioned, this is often called a "LapLink" cable.
It is indeed easy enough to make your own.  The instructions are at
the top of /usr/src/linux/drivers/net/plip.c (as well as in the README.plip
files in the same directory.)
