If you have to do a low level re-format, you'll need a working system with SCSI, and the proper utility program. I hope it's just a matter of deleting the partition, and making a new one, but if the Sparc can't see the size or other info about the hard disk, that may be why. (I don't have a clue about how Sparc's run either.
