What I am trying to do is set up my machine at home so that I can run an Ethernet cable from my (Win98) laptop to my (RH Linux)server. Howard has generously provided me with an ethernet hub, so i've got all the hardware to make this happen. Before I get into specifics of what I'm doing, I'd like to check on the theory, so I know I'm pursuing an attainable goal. My theory is that if i have my net card properly installed and assign it an IP address arbitrarily, then i can telnet from my laptop to the server. The netwrok information won't be arbitrary in the sense that I'll just make stuff up, though. It's arbitrary in that I'm not actually connected to the Internet while the server is at home. But eventually I'm going to move the server from home to the office where it can act as a full time web server. So where it comes to domain names and IP addresses, I'm assigning all the information as if it were already on the LAN. This way, and here's where the theory really takes off, if i can get to the point where my laptop can telnet into the server, then i should be able to take the machine into the office, plug a cable into it, and be off and running. So am I approaching the concept sensibly, or are there caveats I should be aware of? ------------------------------------------------------------------- Next Technical Meeting: February 13 (Sat), 12:30 place: Temple Univ. ** presentation: XEmacs, by Steven Baur and Martin Buchholz Next Nomikai: March 19 (Fri), 19:30 Tengu TokyoEkiMae 03-3275-3691 ------------------------------------------------------------------- more info: http://tlug.linux.or.jp Sponsor: PHT
