There lots more mailers than just Pine and Mutt, too.  Start a search on
the Links page on the TLUG site and you'll turn up a couple dozen, maybe
more. Most free commercial.  There's bound to be something for everyone.
Xemacs also has one or two mail clients.

Pine doesn't do POP, so you need to use fetchmail or an equivalent to
get the mail to your machine.  Pine will talk to a remote SMTP server
for sending mail, though.  I run mine using localhost with sendmail
configured for deferred delivery so that I don't have to be online
whenever I'm writing mail.
