I just realized that that there is one difference between the working systems and the broken on. The good ones have egcs-2.91.57 ( egcs-1.1 release). Now, I thought that egcs was a no-no for compiling the kernel. But that worked on for kernel 2.2.6. On 2.0.36, make invokes gcc -V 2.7.2.3. Trouble is now, I can't even get the network going on the bad machine.
