Follow up to that problem, and what fixed it:  I later learned that the person
who did the install had used Disk Druid, which I have not had good experiences
with.  I suggested doing it over again and using fdisk, and whaddayaknow, it
worked like a charm.   Disk Druid strikes again  :-p
