tlug: Lynx and japanese characters

Just a simple (I hope) question:
Is it possible to use lynx in kterm to display japanese
characters in Linux?

I have tried but I can not make it work and I am 
beginning to believe that it is simply not possible 
(for a number of technical reasons).

Right now I have:
    lynx-2.8jp_ncurses-1
    kterm-6.1.0-6
