Many thanks to Scott for the advice regarding compiling pcmcia-cs. 
It worked just fine when I tried it that way. 

I have since upgraded to TL4.0 Chinese version which 
uses the 2.2.10 kernel. This version is very similar 
to the Japanese 4.0, btw. Lots of nice new features and 
a few new problems to solve, too ...
