There are 2 main USE flags needed for Japanese support, "nls" - to
activate native language support, and "cjk" to activate "Chinese,
Japanese & Korean" support for apps that understand double-byte chars
and to activate Xim support.

For kinput2, there are 2 other flags "freewnn" and "canna" to choose
which (or both) of the Kanji engines to use with Kinput2.

Make sure you "rc-update add canna default" or "rc-update add freewnn
default" to start up the chosen kanji engine on boot if you haven't
already.

As noted earlier you will need "nls" support in glibc, I suggest that
you add "nls" and "cjk" to USE in make.conf.

Also you may want to emerge some true-type Japanese fonts - such as
kochi-fonts.

I've found that I prefer mlterm and rxvt over kterm, but that's just my
personal preference.
