Did you put kterm in sjis-mode?
Try CTRL-MiddleMouseButton and select "Shift_JIS Mode" or start kterm
with "-km sjis".
Can xterm display japanese in anything other than UTF-8 mode?
I never tried gnome-terminal, so I can't say anything about that one.
