Called "on-the-spot" input. Most people do, but this is very hard, because of the way things are implemented in separate processes---you need to do IPC. You may be able to configure "over-the-spot", where the input window overlays the aterm at the spot where insertion will occur. Ugly, but your eyes don't have to move.
