use cifs it is far superior to smb.  If ls doesn't recognize the
encoding it will escape any control characters in the filenames. This
usually results in all the Japanese characters appearing as question
marks. You can check this by setting your console to display utf8 and
running ls --show-control-chars.  Its not the solution but it might help
you work out what is happening.
