I don't know if you can check the server certificate or not, I've never
done it. I suspect that you can, but that's only a guess.
I use because there were a few little things about fetchmail that irked
me. This was over a year ago, and I can't even remember what they were.
A friend was using getmail, recommended it, I tried it and liked it.

So, I can't honestly say Oh, use getmail, it's a million times better
than fetchmail, it's simply (in my case) a matter of taste rather than
knowledge. The getmail faq gives reasons why the author
feels it's better than fetchmail, but I imagine he's prejudiced. :)
At any rate, the tricky part of using mutt with gmail is the smtp part.
That's the main reason I made that page, to deal with sending.
Receiving is, as you've found, fairly trivial.
