Hi Dave,
Not sure if this will help or not, but I was getting a similar error as yours when running evolution:
dave@example.com:~$ sudo printconf *** glibc detected *** double free or corruption (!prev): 0x08179528 ***
to fix it I ran evolution with this as prefix:
G_SLICE=always-malloc
and the double free corruption error went away- so maybe if you do
dave@example.com:~$ G_SLICE=always-malloc /usr/bin/printconf
it will work. Of course you might have to change the directory for printconf, it might not be in /usr/bin
