One quick thing about building your own kernel- it's fun. I remember being somewhat reluctant to recompile a kernel a couple of years ago, but then one day I decided to just sit down and follow a wiki, and the end result was rewarding. I created something like 23 kernels trying to get usb and palm to work, but that was with the 2.4 kernel. With 2.6 I haven't had the need to compile my own yet, but it's still a cool thing to be able to do.These days there are gui clients to help with the whole process so it's not that labor intensive either.
