I thought the point was tunneling the VNC connection through SSH, so the session is encrypted, in which case VNC would be running all the time but only listening for connections from 127.0.0.1. (But I don't use VNC, so I may have misunderstood what others were suggesting.) (SSH may be harder to crack than VNC, so could be additional benefit there as well.) > 2. No. Just a guess, does putting it on 8080 work? 8080 is sometimes used as a test http port (and 8443 for test https), so those two ports may be open in the firewall (perhaps implying your own attempts to open the firewall are not working, or ports are being blocked elsewhere?)
