Re: [tlug] VNC and security

Darren,

Thanks for replying.
I thought the point was tunneling the VNC connection through SSH, so the
session is encrypted, in which case VNC would be running all the time
but only listening for connections from 127.0.0.1. (But I don't use VNC,
so I may have misunderstood what others were suggesting.)
Yeah, that's what I thought the goal was too. But either that's not the case, or I'm not understanding how to set that up.
Just a guess, does putting it on 8080 work? 8080 is sometimes used as a
test http port (and 8443 for test https), so those two ports may be open
in the firewall (perhaps implying your own attempts to open the firewall
are not working, or ports are being blocked elsewhere?)
Whoops, my bad. I just realized that I had set 8443 as the port for SSH in the SSH configuration file as part of the instructions on this web page:
http://www.brainonfire.net/2006/08/21/vnc-over-ssh/

So that's why it was only working on 8443.

Sorry for the confusion.
