I don't understand how they're paying twice. They had your code without
my modifications beforehand, and after paying for my modifications,
they have your code with my modifications. They paid once for the
modifications I did.

Well, isn't that an argument that you *don't* want to use the GPL, in
case you create something that would be a bigger benefit to the world if
it were commercially exploitable by others? The only reason I can see
not to do this is if you're trying to reserve commercial exploitation
for yourself. (Again, fair, but just come out and say that's what you
want.)
