I noticed that there was some discussion of JE. Due to the recent disappearance of Yaseppochi-Gumi's power supply in a puff of smoke, I'm currently working from a resource-constrained machine, can't afford X, so I installed JE from the Sept 95 Infomagic CD-ROM. A couple of warnings which may or may not apply to more recent versions: * Don't install the supplied libc until you've made sure it's newer than your current one. There are *no* JE-specific patches in there, it's just an update. * The old mule has lotsa problems. Get a new one (eg, from sunsite.sut.ac.jp) *as source* and build it yourself. Configuration isn't too hard. (You can ask me for advice.) If you don't have 60MB to spare building Mule, you can't afford Mule anyway. * KON doesn't work right on most linux consoles until you do a "su; chmod u+s /usr/bin/fld.*". Why the font loading program needs to be suid I dunno; maybe it's because the console is a device? Or, you can just always log in as root (not me, I'm into safety in linux, and anything else that ends in 'x'). * KON doesn't like the GPM mouse driver. Oh well. No mouse under KON, at least for the moment. * KON changes the screen mode. This resulted in a severe maladjustment of my monitor. But most modern monitors allow you to adjust for that mode and then it will automatically restore if you exit KON. Not to worry. * KON causes lots of screen flashing when there is a lot of console output. This scares me a little. * ASCII TeX (NTeX) lives in nonstandard places. Ah well. It's probably just as well, to keep the real TeX from getting overwritten (NTeX doesn't always work right, sometimes I need to use the old TeX.) Regards, Steve
