Hi folks-- Just when you thought you'd had enough of my printing problems--here I am again! The good news is that I finally got some Japanese out of my printer. Since plain-text printing looked like it was going to be way more trouble than it's worth, I went ahead to the next step--NTT JTeX. By the way, I want to thank Steve Turnbull for his indispensable instructions in the Linux-Nihongo pages (although I found I had to do a few things differently--so I may contribute a few minor additions once I'm comfortable with the way my stuff's working) So, anyway, I have the Wadalab Mincho font and a functioning Japanese TeX, and I have kanji coming out the other end. I'm having some quality problems, though, and I wonder if anybody can comment on this: When I print out I get, well, "artifacts"--little black rectangles or trapezoids on some of the kanji. The number of them seems to vary according to the font size--e.g., 12 point has very few, while 10 point has more and 11 point is terrible. At any given size, they appear on all instances of the affected character. I wonder if the black goobers have anything to do with the many checksum errors that I get whenever I run dvips or xdvi on a Japanese TeX file. And I wonder if the checksum errors have anything to do with the way I have my TeX trees set up: I built JTeX under /usr/local/lib, but I also have a preexisting TeTeX installation under /usr/lib--and I am using the dvips and xdvi from this old installation. Thanks in advance for the words of wisdom.
