Gnus-mime presumably uses TM, also by Morioka.  That will give you the
summary headers.  I don't know about the release version of SEMI; tm
is known to cause problems with lots of other packages (VM users are
well-advised to simply delete tm, but it thoroughly infests your emacs
and can cause problems with other packages as well), and Morioka-san
recently mail-bombed a list I'm on sending a patch (not small, it
contains the full UCS-to-Mule encoding tables) three times because
SEMI botched.

Gnus itself does not handle Japanese, and Lars couldn't care less as
far as I can tell.  "I am not interested in dealing with multibyte
characters.  Period." --larsi@example.com  I'm not sure that's what he
meant, we clearly weren't communicating, but that's what he wrote.

So you need an add-on MIME package.
