UDF stands for "Universal Disk Format", used by DVD, and by CD-R/CD-RW
packet writing.  This format is used by Adaptec's DirectCD, for example.

UDF is specified by OSTA "Optical Storage Technology Association, as a
subset of ECMA 167, 3rd edition. The specs are available on-line; you
will need both.

The Linux UDF driver is being developed by Ben Fennema
<bfennema@example.com>

I haven't evaluated the driver, but mount/reads seemed to work.  Some of
the tools included in the source tar were quite useful.  I used them,
along with a binary editor, to rebuild the root directory on a corrupted
CD-RW.
