The Xconfigurator that comes with Red Hat, TL, et all has a pretty good monitor database; yours might be in it. If it's not, you need to know the horizontal and vertical sync rates, because you'll have to tell it yourself. > that xwindows will run with the following configuration: > "1024x768x8" (I think the person is a bsd afficionado, > however...x is x?). The last 8 refers to a color depth of 8 bpp, AKA 8-bit color. This can get gross, but I suppose it's good enough for a server. As an alternative, you might want to go down to 800 x 600 x 16 instead. With only 1 meg of video RAM, you're rather constrained on resolution. Look for Xconfigurator in /usr/X11R6/bin/Xconfigurator (if you have a TL system; RH and its clones are probably in the same place). If you don't have it, the more basic xf86config should be in the same place. > Btw, can I damage the monitor if I > get xfconfig wrong? Yes, you can. If the sync rates you set are over the monitor spec, it is possible. It's more likely that X will barf, but damaging the monitor is not impossible. If you don't know the monitor specs, you can probably find them on the manufacturer's web site. With those in hand, you should be able to set up a working X system.
