Yes.  Ubuntu has their hooks into firefox too.  That's the only thing I 
really clean up on both ubuntu and mint.
You do a full remove of firefox from synaptic, get the appropriate 
latest release from Mozilla, untar it, move it to /usr/share and link 
the executable at firefox/firefox to /usr/bin.  Takes about 5 minutes...

I just noticed they have both /ja and /en-... releases if that means anything to you.
I just read the next ubuntu long term release is Oct. 17.  I may try 
again then -- at least to see if the gnome shell still works.  Can't 
stand Gnome-3 or Unity...
I'm a little nervous about Ubuntu.  They're doing changes to make it 
work on their phone and I'm nervous about how that will affect the rest 
of their support.
